Nutrition 101
Project Information:
Date: 2023
Client: Portfolio
Services: eLearning Design & Development
Tools Used:
Design: MindMeister, Google Docs
Storyboard: Google Slides
Development: Genially, Audacity, Canva
About the Project:
Overview: A fictional marketing agency, 'The Donnelly Group', identified a need to create a health and wellness program for their employees.
Yearly employee surveys reported high levels of stress and overall burn out among employees. HR reported an increase in staff sick days as well.
The Donnelly Group believed that in offering a health and wellness program, employees would have the tools to better their overall physical, mental, and emotional health, leading to lower levels of health issues, a decrease in the number of sick days taken, as well as allow for a return to greater overall productivity for employees.
Analysis: Upon reviewing data, it was decided that one of the topics employees would benefit most from was 'Nutrition Basics.' This was to be delivered in an eLearning module that could be completed on any device.
This module was outlined initially with MindMeister. This allowed me to create a basic outline for the course, as well as map out learning objectives for each section.
Design: The design document was created with Google Docs. During this process, data from surveys was analyzed. The target audience was identified, and learner personas were created. Goals and objectives were focused, and assessments were created based on the objectives. Other methods of evaluation were included. Our deliverables and method of delivery was decided on and the complete scope of the project and goals was outlined.
Design Models Used: ADDIE, Gagne's 9 Events, Kirkpatrick's Four Levels, Bloom's Taxonomy
The storyboard, created with Google Slides, was made with the learner in mind. Concise and usable information on nutrition was researched and presented in small chunks. Activities to practice new knowledge were presented throughout, in realistic formats, ones learners will actually encounter.
The final assessment has learners applying all of their new knowledge to create a healthy meal, a skill they can immediately use in their lives.
Development: Genially was chosen to develop this eLearning module because of its ease of use for learners and ability to work on any device.
With no need for branching scenarios or a large amount of movement within the course, this tool was ideal.
Audacity was used to record and edit the audio for the course.
Canva was also used to source and edit graphics and create The Donnelly Group logos and branding.
Implementation, Evaluation, and Takeaways: Because this course was created for a fictional company, I was not able to implement or evaluate the learning on a company-wide scale.
I did, however, learn a lot in this process:
I followed the ADDIE model, but with a lot of iteration between the design and development phases. This may have been a project where SAM would have been preferred. Rapid prototyping would have allowed for some new ideas that surfaced for me, too far into the project.
Nutrition is large topic and adding too much information was easy to do. Keeping the learner and objectives in mind helped me stay focused on what information needed to be in the course and what could be removed.
In some areas Genially had some limitations that created a need to change the design. In other areas it allowed for more flexibility and creativity than expected. I found it to be a great tool, for the right project.
If I were to do this project again, I would break the course into three separate courses. This is a lot of information to digest in one sitting. Three separate courses would allow for a little broader and deeper learning, as well as more opportunities for scenario-based practice.
